Thomas Ferriday- what it’s like to be an Inspire! Award winner
Last year I won an Inspire! Award in 2019 for my learning achievements and the steps that I took to get to where I am today. I had a challenging past which led me to leave school with no GCSEs in addition to a difficult home life. I told myself from a young age that I was going to work hard and take every opportunity to get away from troubles and find something I loved. I felt driven to improve and succeed even when I received knock-backs.
My prospects started to turn around over time once I enrolled at Cardiff and Vale College on a level 2 Brickwork Diploma, I attended extra maths and English classes to progress onto a level 3 course. I would never have made it this far if it wasn’t for my co-workers, they believed in me, especially my teacher Paul who has continually guided and encouraged me to achieve my goals.
I am still working at Cardiff and Vale College as a Brickwork Technician and I now mentor new learners at the start of their journey. I am really enjoying it! I also passed my driving test and bought myself a car so I can get to different places and I don’t want to stop there, I want to make plans and keep getting better, because I always find a way and do my best.
When I look back on the night of the Inspire! Awards, I remember that this was truly one of the best experiences ever! It felt special to be invited to the ceremony and being presented with my award for all my achievements. The event was very well-planned too. When I was asked to come up to the stage, I was very nervous as I never been in on stage in front of a large crowed but it gives you an amazing buzz and a confident feeling.
Thank you for reading my story and I hope learning can make a difference to your life just as it has mine.
