“I believe that tutoring is about providing personalised support and guidance to learners from all backgrounds and building relationships with my learners based on trust and mutual respect. Martha Holman is a tutor in Adult Basic Education and Essential Skills at Cardiff and Vale College. Her dedication to adult education and commitment to promoting equality and anti-racism are at the forefront of her work.

Nominated by Rebecca Preece from Cardiff and Vale College, Martha’s journey is described as one of resilience and advocacy. She states, “Her story is one of overcoming adversity, championing equality, and making a lasting
impact through education. She is a true inspiration.”

Martha’s path from Zimbabwe to the UK exemplifies her determination. Upon her arrival, she encountered considerable obstacles, including a lack of English proficiency which hindered her ability to pursue her teaching career. Nevertheless, Martha embarked on a transformative journey, engaging in low-wage employment while learning English, ultimately retraining as a teacher. Her academic achievements include distinctions in both her PGCE and master’s degrees.

Martha’s passion for education is contagious, leading her to make significant strides in fostering equality through her teaching. She has played a pivotal role in developing an innovative anti-racism module tailored for learners with additional learning needs. This curriculum not only raises awareness of diversity and inclusion but also actively involves students in discussions and initiatives aimed at combating racism and promoting social
justice.

Many of her students have successfully advanced from Entry Level to Level 1 and 2 qualifications under her guidance. Martha cultivates an engaging and supportive learning atmosphere, motivating her students to progress and achieve their aspirations. Her dynamic approach to teaching literacy, numeracy, and digital skills is customised to meet each learner’s needs, ensuring that all feel valued and supported.

Beyond her professional achievements, Martha demonstrates profound dedication to her community and her homeland, Zimbabwe. She established the charity ‘Love Zimbabwe,’ which provides essential resources and support to communities in need within Zimbabwe. Her frequent visits to Zimbabwe, along with her involvement in activities at Abergavenny Castle Street church, being the EDI officer for the Gwent Hills & Vales, and engaging in a variety of fundraising efforts, highlight her commitment to making a positive impact both locally and globally.

Martha asserts, “It’s never too late to start or continue learning. Through my personal life experiences, I can help
my learners rediscover the joy and benefits of education.”
